From www.washingtonpost.com:
Mysterious mass deaths of Alaskan birds baffles scientists
“Tens of thousands of dead birds are washing up on the beaches of Alaska’s Prince William Sound, an unexplained mass die-off that some experts say may be related to the changing climate.

The birds, all of a species known as the common murre, appear to have starved to death, federal wildlife officials say, suggesting disruptions to the supply of herring and other fish that make up the birds’ diet…”

There is a lot of bluff in this environmental business
From Inviting Guests into this World (#295):
There's so much bluff on the subject of pollution, on environmental preservation that today it's really hard to know what's what. If a person has some common sense approach to things, certainly he should listen to reason...

There are certainly laws preventing factories from emptying smoke stacks on cities, you have to have machinery inside to filter, to remove some of the pollutants in the air. Certainly, why not?

But there also are extremes in this… There is a lot of bluff in this environmental business. Some people are just silly, some are sentimental, some are just crazy. I’ll give you an example. People are so worried that if you’re we are going to destroy a certain environment than a certain butterfly will become extinct. Now this butterfly has to live on a certain bud. Now this bud won’t exist if you’ll try to save the crops because this bud only lives on crops. But this beautiful red butterfly can only exist on this bark! And so there is a whole movement to save that butterfly. And that’s all very ridiculous, the world can get on very well without that butterfly.

Let’s say certain animals, wild animals are getting extinct. Well, I suppose it’s a sentimental thing. But what would be the tragedy if a certain species would get extinct? What’s so terrible if a certain kind of deer became extinct? Is it so terrible? After all we’re not living on deer meat now and the whole plan of nature is broken up anyhow. The original plan that there should be a whole hierarchy that one animal lives on another animal and animals live on small animals and small animals live on plants and animals and so on but that doesn’t exist anymore. So it’s not going to interfere with our civilization at all...
